JANUARY - Inventory Cleaning Month!

With all things Second Life, inventories are the worst.  If you don't keep up with them, they can really get out of hand.   I have one friend that has over a million items in her inventory!  I couldn't even imagine what that must look like.  I've been here for 12 years and my inventory is pretty low considering those who have been here as long as I have.

I was told a long time ago that your viewer, along with loading a sim, loading your avatar, and loading your accessories, also needs to load your inventory.  People who have excessively high inventory items tend to have loading issues, primarily with a failure to load the entire inventory.  Keeping it around the 50K mark makes it easier for your inventory to load and prevents inventory loss.  I don't know if this is actually true or not but lets be real, unless you are a avid builder there really isn't an excuse to have a large inventory - even if most of your inventory includes clothing/hair/shoes/accessories.  I know someone in game who has been here just as long as I have and she has under 20K in her inventory.  So that's my goal, and if you'd like yours low too, follow my blog over the next few days and get to cleaning!

The first thing - have two inventory windows opened.  You can do this by clicking on the button that looks like a suitcase, or something similar to that, this way you can do a search to see if the item you bought has been unpacked.

Delete clothing that is not compatible with your body - this should be done for every folder in your inventory!  Why keep them?  The goal is to downsize!  Be very careful when doing this, don't delete and huds that come with it!

If you have an item that hasn't been opened and you don't know what it is, just do a search in MP and see if it pops up.  Its a good idea to keep MP open while you're doing this just in case.

Once you've finished, get that trash emptied out!  If you put too much in it, you could potentially crash out of world - trust me it's happened to me more than once!

Now take a deep breath and stand in awe of a job well done!  There is so much more to come, and the key is not to try to do it all at once, there is no reason why you can't take your time to do this.

ADVICE:  When purchasing new items, get rid of the LM's, the notecards, the scripts and outfit clothing that doesn't fit your mesh body....do it as soon as you have the folder open!  If you keep up with it, you won't have to spend hours cleaning all of that stuff out and getting stressed over it!

Before you log off each evening, go to your recent tab and start putting things away!  Then you'll never have to worry about the dreaded inventory cleaning again - unless you are getting rid of things you don't need any more, but that's a different blog post.

Now that my received items have been put away, I'll stop for the night.  Remember the goal is to organize, and you may not be able to do it in one sitting so take your time with it.

Next task:  Organizing the main inventory folder, save that for the next sitting.  Hope this helps!
